The Spanish Pyrenees 10 days hiking

ITINERARY - difficulty grade B ( height gains of up to 800m, 2,700 ft a day ) | ||
Day 1: Spain |
Meet in Barcelona:
We'll pick you up at your hotel at 1pm, and drive to the mountain village
of Torla (4-5 hrs) Our first night dinner together in our hotel. Torla
is our base for three nights.

Day 2: Spain | Ordesa Canyon : We take the local bus into the National Park where cars are not allowed. Then we take the steep Senda de los Cazadores (the Hunters' Trail) to reach the balcony trail - the Faja de Pelay - which follows the southern side of this impressive canyon. (6hrs walking) | |
Day 3: Spain | Ordesa Canyon: Today we explore the Northern side of the canyon, following the Faja Petazals as it climbs out of Spruce forest onto hillsides covered with yellow broom and other spring flowers. (5hrs walking) | |
Day 4: France

Gavarnie. Today we walk from Spain,
over the Pyrenees, into France. From the roadhead at Bujaruelo (1338m)
we climb steadily to our pass - the Puerto de Bujaruelo - at 2273m (7,455ft).
Our descent, over rocky ground and then steep forest, takes us into
the French town and hiking base of gavarnie (1365m); and our hotel.
Settle in for a three-night stay. (5hrs walking) |

Day 5: France |
Cirque de Gavarnie: The Cirque de gavarnie is a World Heritage Site and today's walk takes us into the very heart of the impressive circular cliffs, a mecca for rock-climbers in summer and for ice-climbers in winter. (4hrs walking) | |
Day 6: France |
Cirque
de Troumousse: A visit to the adjacent " Cirque de Troumousse"
. A 30 min drive takes us into an impressive limestone cirque and our
balcony trail - a tour of this grassy cirque (with chamois). (5hrs walking) |

Day 7: Spain |
Port Neuf de Pinede: A big day:
From our hotel we climb steadily, past the Refuge de Espuguettes (2027m)
to our first pass, the Hourquette d'Alans at 2430m (7,970ft). From here
a descent and then a long traverse take us to our high point - the Port
Neuf de Pinede at 2466m (8,088ft). This is the border between France
and Spain and now we drop, steeply, back into Spain and the valley of
Pineta. (8hrs walking - or a ride in the minibus, perhaps visiting the
nearby historic and religious town of LOURDES on the way) |

Day 8: Spain |
The Puerto de Chistau: From Pineta
we transfer to the road-head (90 min) before re-joining the GR11 to
cross the dramatic Puerto de Chistau at 2592m (8,500ft) to descend a
flowery valley and arrive in the pretty hiking town of Benasque. (7hrs
walking) |

Day 9: Spain | Forau de
Aigualluts: A day in the lively hiking centre of Benasque - the
Chamonix of the Spanish Pyrenees. (4hrs walking) |

Day 10: Spain |
Cuello de
Ballibierna: We drive to the Puente de Coronas at 1970m. Our high
pass today is the Cuello de Ballibierna at 2728m (8,950ft). After another
small pass, the Cuello d'Ariglos, our minibus rescues us at Lac de Llauset
(2190m) and takes us into Vielha for hot baths and a good meal. (5hrs
walking) Our hotel is Vielha is normally the Hotel Serrano, our base for 2 nights. |

Day 11 | Aigues Tortes National Park: A day in the park! We use the minibus to return to our finishing point yesterday. From here we continue our GR11 adventure, crossing the Pont de Rius 2320m (7,610ft) to follow a series of glacier lakes that give this national park it's name "twisted waters". (6hrs walking) We are soon back at our hotel for our final evening meal & celebration. | |
Day 12 | Barcelona: our minibus takes us back to Barcelona so you can continue sight-seeing in this fabulous city and historic Mediterranean port. | |
